Congratulations!! Pregnancy is such an exciting time, but it can also be overwhelming. There are so many things you need to get ready and your life is about to go through a huge change. One of the most common questions in relation to newborn photography is "when should I book my babies newborn photos?"
Most of my clients book their sessions after the 1st trimester. The earlier you can secure your booking the more likely your favorite photographer will have availability. Most newborn photographers book your session based on your expected due date and they only book a limited amount of sessions per month. This ensures they can get your newborn in for their session between 5 and 14 days old.
The best time to photograph newborns is between 5 and 14 days old. If you plan to breastfeed, your milk usually will come in around day 3/4. Planning our session after this allows babe to adjust, they will have stopped the initial cluster feeding period and will have full bellies after feeding. It also allows babe and mom time to heal if their was any trauma from birth, and to work out any feeding issues for both breast fed and bottle fed infants. While it is possible to photograph newborns after 14 days they become more alert and less squishy from being in utero. I have photographed newborns up to 5 weeks old but capturing those sleepy and posed images becomes more difficult and being baby led means I do not force any pose they do not want to do.
What if I've had my baby and didn't pre-book a session?
It is never to late to reach out to me about a session. While pre booking for your due date is best, if you have decided you want photos after having your baby please reach out to your newborn photographer. They may be able to adjust their schedule and fit you in for photos, or if they are completely booked they will have a list of other qualified newborn photographers that they can refer you to. Even if that newborn photography window is missed a baby milestone session or lifestyle newborn session will capture your babies tiny little details and you will cherish those images forever. One thing is true for every baby, they grow and change so quickly! Every week they are learning something new and growing into their individual personalities. I always suggest that families book sessions throughout that first year to capture all of these changes.
