When to book your maternity session | Alysia Lafleche Photography

Edmonton's Favorite Maternity Photographer

The second you find out you are pregnant, your whole world changes. There are a million things that start to go through your mind and often important details get missed and you wish you'd have thought of them sooner. As an Edmonton photographer, I want to provide you with an easy and comfortable booking experience for your maternity session. I get asked a lot about when is the best time to book your maternity photos, and my experience with working with all things pregnancy has given me some great insights.

SCHEDULE YOUR SESSION BETWEEN 28 & 34 WEEKS GESTATION

In my years as a registered nurse, and as a maternity and newborn photographer, I have worked with a lot of expectant mamas! I know that each and every pregnancy is different, and every mama-to-be feels different during the different stages of their pregnancy. I can tell you that by booking at the beginning of your third trimester to about six weeks ahead of your due date gives us ample time to work through anything that may come up. Plus you’ll still be relatively comfortable, I mean you are still growing a human being soo it's not always peachy, but you get what I mean. Here are four more reasons why I recommend this timeline:

1. YOUR BELLY IS BIG AND BEAUTIFUL

It’s a maternity session, so of course we want to highlight that beautiful bump! I love helping woman feel beautiful in their skin, so I want to celebrate all of the phases of women and motherhood , so maternity photography is really important to me. I want you to feel confident and excited about your baby bump, and to see that glow that we are always talking about, while still being comfortable and able to pose safely.

2. YOU HAVE MORE OPTIONS FOR WARDROBE AND LOCATIONS

Living in Edmonton we are so fortunate to only be a few hours away from the Drumheller Badlands and the Alberta Rocky Mountains. These locations offer breathtaking views and the perfect backdrop for an adventure maternity session. Some of these locations require special permits and licensing for photography which means you need to book in advance to shoot there. Now lets talk wardrobe! Whether you choose to wear a gown from my studio closet or a piece of your own, booking early ensures you have time to plan your outfit well in advance. Keeping in mind that your bump is going to grow and that we want it to be the highlight, choose pieces you’ll be confident and comfortable in! We want to get all those beautiful detail shots of you cradling your bump, and loving on that baby.

3. IF ANYTHING CHANGES, WE HAVE TIME!

I've had moms go into labor as early as 30 weeks, thankfully we knew she would probably go early because she was having twins, so we had photographed her session at 28 weeks. Having those 6-12 weeks before your due date allows for some wiggle room if something happens and we need to reschedule. Pregnancy can be unpredictable and you may feel amazing during one part and not so great the next. I completely understand and so I like to be able to offer some flexibility if we need to move your date. Together we can plan the perfect moment to capture your maternity session.

4. I TYPICALLY BOOK UP A FEW MONTHS IN ADVANCE

I wish I could photograph everyone but I only have so much time! I'm usually booking a few months into my calendar so make sure you book early to avoid that awkward "I'm fully booked" conversation.
